Playing at over 6,700 yards from the tips and a rating/slope of 72.4/137, this par 72 course is a must play for all playing levels. The day I played the greens had just been rolled so they were playing true and quick. The greens at Mistwood are generally pretty fast to begin with anyway and have plenty of undulation which can make putting an adventure. I find the course to not be to difficult due to its length, but there are several factors that can make your round a nightmare. Water comes into play on almost every hole, and the terrain is very hilly, so lies and stances are not always even. The terrain is one of my favorite attributes about this course. It make each hole interesting and adds value to the aesthetics of the course. Mistwood also has one of my favorite par 3’s in IL (see pics), and a stretch of finishing holes that can’t be missed. Mistwood offers a grass driving range, a nice putting area, and nice clubhouse. I highly recommend this course to anyone and definitely bring plenty of balls with you.
Hole by hole descriptions:
1st Hole: Par 4, 395yds. The 1st hole at Mistwood may look tricky at first with the split fairways, but just take out the driver at aim straight at the 150yd stick. Your second shot should be a rather short one, and you are faced with a few green side bunkers and a large undulated green.
2nd Hole: Par 4, 362yds. The 2nd hole is a short dogleg left par 4, and a prime birdie hole. Take out the driver and aim right over the trees on the left, and if you miss it right you should still be safe, unless of course it’s a severe slice. This will leave you with a short uphill approach shot, and a chance for a birdie.
3rd Hole: Par 5, 567yds. The 3rd is the first of the 4 great par 5’s on this course. This hole is reachable in two for longer hitters, but there are risks involved. The best line to take on this hole is down the right side. This is the first hole where you really begin to see the rolling terrain of this course. There is water all along the entire right side of the fairway and a little stream guarding the green, so be careful with your second shot. The green is shaped like a bean with a bunker in front, a hill surrounding acting as a backstop, and the green slopes heavily from back to front.
4th Hole: Par 4, 420yds. The 4th is one of the longer par 4’s, but a great driving hole.
5th Hole: Par 4, 369yds. The 5th is another great driving hole if you don’t mind flirting with the water along the entire right side. A driver is definitely not necessary on this hole, but hey that is your choice.
6th Hole: Par 4, 388yds. On the 6th you might want to leave the driver in the bag and use either a long iron or utility club. The hole is a short dogleg right, with a hazard about 100yds from the green, which is why you want to keep it shorter off the tee. This a great birdie hole.
7th Hole: Par 3, 200yds. The 7th is the first of the par 3’s. It is a long downhill shot with water behind the hole. Depending on the wind, this is a tricky shot with the water staring you in the face, so choose the right club. Short is always better on the hole.
8th Hole: Par 5, 566yds. This is great par 5, and there are many obstacles to deal with. Tough to say which side of the fairway to take your tee shot down, but either way you go you will most likely have an uneven lie, as this hole is filled with many rolling hills. In my opinion this hole is not reachable in two unless you absolutely crush your drive and you are given a great lie. For your second shot you won’t be able to see the green as it is blocked by tall weeds. The green slopes greatly from front to back, so you may want to know the pin placement before you hit your approach. This is a fun hole, but tough one, so enjoy.
9th Hole: Par 3, 183yds. The 9th is mid length par 3. In my opinion if you are going to have a par 3 end the front 9 it should have the wow factor (we’ll get to that on 14).
10th Hole: Par 4, 352yds. The 10th is a short par 4, dogleg right. If you want to risk it you can take the driver and cut it, but a long iron is all you really need off the tee. This is the first hole with a good amount of trees, but they really shouldn’t come into play. Great birdie chance to start the back nine, and well needed because the back nine is tougher in my opinion.
11th Hole: Par 4, 441yds. The 11th is the longest par 4 and a grip and rip hole. Just left of the bunkers on the right will leave you with a perfect approach shot. Your second is an uphill shot to a narrow green.
12th Hole: Par 4, 348yds. Another short par 4 where driver is not necessarily needed. Water hugs the entire left side of the fairway, but the fairway is one of the wider ones on the course, so you really shouldn’t try and flirt with water. Your approach shot is uphill and all carry.
13th Hole: Par 4, 375yds. The 13th starts a stretch of 6 great finishing holes. 13 is a short par 4, where again driver is not needed. The approach shot is one of my favorites on the course, just a nice scenic background.
BEWARE OF WATER!!!
14th Hole: Par 3, 200yds. Now, for my favorite hole on the course, and one of my favorite par 3’s in IL. This is the wow factor is always mention I like to see on par 3’s. Nothing like a shot that is all carry over water with not much room for error. They do have a set of tees that is not over the water, but why even bother. This is a downhill shot and depending on the wind can be anywhere from a utility club to a 7 iron. Enjoy!
15th Hole: Par 5, 559yds. This is considered the toughest hole on the course, which I’m not sure about, but definitely a good one. I always aim my drive for the middle bunker, and since I normally have a fade on my drives I know I will be save if it’s off line. This hole is reachable in two if you can get somewhere in between the 2nd and 3rd bunker. The green is narrow, and water is all along the fairway, so be careful on your 2nd/3rd shots.
16th Hole: Par 4, 346yds. The 16th is the shortest par 4, but really not drivable. Like the 15th, water comes into play on every shot. A mid-long iron is all you really need on this hole.
17th Hole: Par 3, 175yds. The 17th is decent par 3. Another hole where trees come into play as your tee shot might have to go over the trees depending on where the pin is placed. Remember there is water long and left of the green.
18th Hole: Par 5, 527yds. The 18th is a great finishing hole with a new feature to the course. We finally see trees guarding the entire right side of the hole, that really come into play. The right side of the fairway in lined with bunkers, so an accurate drive is really needed on this hole. The green is off to the right and there is water on the right side near the green, with a creek in front. This hole is reachable in two for the long hitters, but it will be a tough approach shot. Perfect finishing hole to great golf course.
Mistwood is a must play and I know you will enjoy your rounds. The course offers a fair round of golf for beginners, but will also challenge the better golfer with its fast undulating greens. Price wise Mistwood is fairly price around $70. Bring a lot of balls and head over to Mistwood for your next round.
Tee it Up!!
